The attractive colour of the doublet worn by this member of Clan Mackay was produced from native dyes. The art of making these has unfortunately been lost. The dull red colour was concocted from rock lichen or blackberry, with verdigris and sal ammoniac. The Highlanders made use of fir club moss instead of alum to fix the colours in dyeing. The flat bonnet shown was in universal use until about the year 1800, when the Glengarry was enthusiastically adopted by many Highlanders.
The present Chief of Clan Mackay is the thirteenth Lord Reay in the peerage of scotland, who is also Baron Mackay of Ophemert in Holland. He was born a Dutch citizen, but has been granted British nationality, and now resides in Scotland.
