This charming figure of a Highland lady of the upper classes is dressed in the fashion typical of the end of the eighteenth century. The tartan plaid is gracefully draped over the brocaded gown, below which is seen a generous portion of the silk quilted petticoat. The hair ornament -known as a snood-has in the centre a silver clan badge, and denotes that its wearer is unmarried. The plaid is crossed over the breast, and fastened by a Highland brooch of Celtic design.
Clan Lamont was a much persecuted race, and some of its members, obliged for their own protection to change their surname, chose to assume the names of various colours. Thus we find many of the clan became Black, Brown, White and Whyte.
